Antoinette van de Water (Bring The Elephant Home) is a passionate conservationist that has conducted research on human-elephant conflicts. On a study under the supervision of FFNA-winner Dr. Lucy King, she looked into reducing conflict between elephants and farmers by using bees to improve the effectiveness of fences. Together with the Phuluang Wildlife Research Station, she has collected a large amount of camera trap data capturing elephant behaviour near a beehive fence in Thailand.
We are delighted to announce that these videos have all been analysed (in part with the use of citizen science through Zooniverse!) and processed into an article! The early version can be accessed here.
In an online event, presenters from all over the world, such as Antoinette van de Water (BTEH, South Africa), Dr. Lucy King (Future for Nature Winner, Save the Elephants, Kenya), Kevin Matteson (Project Dragonfly, Miami University), Dr. Prachi Mehta (Wildlife Research and Conservation Society, India), Kylie Butler (beehive fence study in Sri Lanka), Dr. Michelle Henley and Robin Cook (Elephants Alive, South Africa) and Rachaya Arkajak (Phuluang Wildlife Research Station, Thailand). They will share their newest insights on how bees can help elephants to peacefully coexist with farmers. We will broadcast some inspiring stories and videos of for instance the beehive fence project Kanchanaburi, Thailand. Apart from all of these amazing people, we will start a panel discussion with the authors, and scientists working with beehive fences in Asia and Africa.
