Bees and elephants are both keystone species. They make life possible for others by maintaining the ecosystem they are part of. Also, both species are under threat due to human impacts. Today, World Bee Day 2020, we would like to ask for attention for a solution that benefits bees, elephants, nature and humans. Bee the Change!
Since people have moved into elephant territory, elephants have moved into human territory. This often results in conflicts, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are peaceful ways to deter elephants from plantations and villages that benefit farmers and nature. Win-win!
Bee the Change!
Beehive fences work with nature, instead of going against it. Local communities benefit not only by safeguarding their crops but also through sales of honey and sometimes bees. Moreover, bees provide an important ecosystem service by pollinating plants, thereby not only sustaining crops but also biodiversity.
Our study showed that the method effectively deterred over 80% of elephants that approached the beehive fence. The study also highlighted additional benefits, such as extra income, pride, skills development and feelings of wellbeing.
20 May coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia and praised the bees for their ability to work so hard whilst needing so little attention. The purpose of World Bee Day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.
